It’s a real trip back in time when you walk through the door of Chartier. We are in 1896 when the Chartier brothers transformed this former station hall into a popular canteen. The workers or employees who came to eat there could “have their napkin”. The regulars put their belongings in their own little drawer.
It’s a place you go for lunch or dinner before a show. You don’t come to Chartier’s for the gastronomy. We are here for a very honest daily cooking at a very low price and in the great French tradition.
It will be necessary to arrive before 12:30 pm or 7:30 pm in week because there is affluence. We arrive by a small dead end located on the street of Faubourg-Montmartre. You can enter by the main access if you come at the beginning of the service. Otherwise, you will have to take a less romantic way, specially designed to manage the queues, like at “Disney park”. You are then immediately taken in charge and placed. Don’t be surprised to share your table with other customers. It’s the style of the house. So we exchange with our neighbors, in a friendly way.
You will find the great classics of traditional French cuisine on the menu: Celery remoulade, leeks vinai-grette, herring apples in oil, snails…starters priced between 1 and 7.50€. On the main courses, you can find black blood pudding with apples and mashed potatoes, sausage knife from Aveyron, calf’s head with Gribiche sauce, fried frankfurters, butcher’s piece with pepper sauce and French fries…between 7€ and 13€.
Don’t think that we can’t serve fast in France. A brigade of about twenty waiters in “log” mot different et à mettre entre guillements (black vest with multiple pockets) and long white apron is here very busy. Starter, main course and dessert can be served in less than half an hour.
Au total, une entrée, un plat, un dessert servis avec un quart de vin à moins de 30 euros « en cinémascope ».
